Long time no blog, but here I am again. First post since last January, but that was because Palm disapproved of my blogging and I didn’t want the internal controversy. But as it happens I’m no longer a Palm employee as of last Tuesday, thanks to a new Senior Vice President who wanted to hire her own people to own the App Catalog. I could vent a great deal about the management mistakes that have been made at Palm over the last few months, but I prefer to look forward. Besides, I still believe in the potential of the platform and have a lot of good feelings for the folks I worked with there.

But that also means that I’m looking for my next job. Could be permanent or contract, as long as it is full time and allows me to work on user-centric software that solves real problems for real people. If you know of something, DM me on twitter. A mini resumé is also available on LinkedIn.

Another change is the URL of this blog. Somehow my domain expired at dotster on July 4 and I didn’t notice. Probably because dotster sends me so much spammy marketing email that I just auto-deleted it without reading. And some tool has hijacked the domain, so I’m going back to the wordpress default url, http://shebanation.wordpress.com. Sorry for the inconvenience, but you’ll need to update any feed URLs you may have subscribed to.

That’s it for now. I promise to actually write more about tech subjects now that I don’t have to worry about Palm’s PR folks coming down on me – although Lynn and Jon were very nice to me, they still ruled over all public discourse with an iron fist!

Jobs for Flex Engineers and Deep QE

I’ve got a couple of jobs open I want to advertise. I mentioned them a couple of weeks ago when trying (and failing miserably, I might add) to lure Yahoo! engineers into the fold, but the reqs are officially open now and I want to start banging the drum, since this is a great chance to work with Flex and AIR on the client side and with a distributed web service on the server side. Buzzword, SHARE, and Brio are just the first taste of the products we’re working on, with much more cool stuff to come.

Here are the two jobs available:

A Web Services QE engineer with extensive experience proving the scalability of web applications and web service APIs. This position is in San Francisco.
A Flex UI engineer who has an evolved design aesthetic and wants to build killer web applications using Flex. Knowledge of Flex not required, but the ideal candidate will be able to show me at least one great user experience they built using Cocoa, WPF, AJAX, or similar. This position is in San Francisco or San Jose.

Our larger group also has five summer intern positions open: one for a QE automation developer, the others for Flex/Java/.NET developers working on our next generation hosted services platform. These positions are in Seattle, San Francisco (2), San Jose, and Newton.

Been a long time coming, but change is gonna come…

I’ve been a total slacker about updating my blog since MAX at the beginning of October. There’s been no shortage of things to talk about:

OOXML’s failure to get fast-tracked
ISO approving PDF
my new iPod Touch (and its frustrating lack of the Mail and Maps applications)
getting to meet and work with the Buzzword folks
all the updates to SHARE and the great usage/feedback we’re getting
and so on…

But the sad truth is I’ve just been way too busy. Work has been fun but crazy, and my wife and I have adopted a child, Ruby Phuong. That meant I spent three weeks as a single dad to our first daughter while my wife was in Vietnam dealing with the US bureaucracy, and now we’ve got all the fun of a new kid in the household. Bottom line is I haven’t been getting much sleep over the last few months.

But I promise to do better from here on out, starting with my next post. I’m going to try to get back to a once a week minimum posting schedule. Feel free to bug me if I don’t meet that goal…

New site design and logo

As you can see if you are viewing this site in a web browser and not an RSS feed reader, I’ve updated the design of my site. The new design is based on unsleepable by Ben Gray – my tweaks consist primarily of a new logo and some updated font specifications. The site will look best if you have the Myriad Web Pro font installed, but should still look fine if you don’t. Let me know if you have problems.

The logo itself was done for me by my ever-so-talented wife Michele. I like it because the little guy reminds me of the old PlaceWare logo, while the whole thing still looks modern. For those who never saw it, here’s the PlaceWare logo for reference:

Welcome to my new blog hosted on WordPress.com… The transition went pretty smoothly – everyone’s comments should be here, and the new blog has some nifty features.

Still to come: updating the blog look and feel to something that is more “me”. Right now I’m using a standard WordPress template. Not sure when I’ll get the time to do this work, though, so bear with me.

Commenting reopened

On January 9th, I set up my blog to only accept authenticated comments, as described in this blog post.

Unfortunately, the net effect is that the number of comments on my blog has gone down greatly, even though the number of readers has gone up. I’m not happy with that, so I’ve gone back to moderating comments by hand and manually filtering out the comment spam Movable Type isn’t catching.

I hate to do this, but I’ve been getting a lot of blog spam, so I’ve changed my blog to only allow comments from users authenticated by Six Apart’s TypeKey system. I apologize for the hassle factor for those who wish to comment. Please keep in mind that this doesn’t prevent you from posting without anyone really knowing who you are, in the sense that its pretty easy to set up a TypeKey account that points to a free email account.
